The Hardware Societe

Clean and bright, with large wooden communal tables and yellow lights dangling precariously from its ceiling, the Hardware Societe is a gorgeous little cafe that is more often than not accompanied by wait times from 30 minutes to a solid hour.

Offering scrumptious breakfast and lunch items smack bang in the middle of the city, it’s one of the most popular brunch spots that Melbourne has to offer.

The coffees are positively stellar here, and very much on par with Hammer and Tong (see our review here).

One glance at the menu and I can’t go past those baked eggs. The vegetarian option comes out in a green stone pot (piping hot!) and is packed full with sweet pumpkin, a good serving of spinach and a tomato base. Given the heat, most of the egg had actually cooked through by the time I got to the yolks, though thankfully they were not rubbery in texture at all.

Combined with the chewiness of the slices of crusty bread, it’s the perfect choice to combat the fluctuating temper of Melbourne’s weather.

The scrambled eggs with moreton bay bugs was another quite large portion. The scrambled eggs were creamy, complemented well by a healthy dose of peas. The bug itself was quite refreshing (more of a salad), served in a light creamy sauce.

IMG_3349 I really enjoyed my visit to The Hardware Societe; the coffee is spot on, and the food is wholesome and guaranteed to fill the rumbliest of bellies. That being said though, it’d be well worthwhile to visit here on an off-peak hour if you can help it – at 8:30am there was already quite a few groups seated, and I presume that there would have been no tables left by 9:30am. This all being on a weekday of course.
