Stovetop is equal parts and chic and relaxed. And with great coffee, great food & and a great location, it’s the ideal place for students to obtain a sense of tranquillity. Safe to say it’s a strong contender for taking 1st place on my favourite-places-to-go-on-a-break list, and I’m sure others in the area would feel the same.

Cinnamon Waffles with pomegranate molasses, vanilla bean custard, agave and house almond dukkah. V ($13)

The waffles were perfect – fluffy on the inside with a golden brown crunch on the outside. The thick custard sandwiched in between wasn’t sickly sweet and oozed out as I dipped in with my knife and fork. The nutty dukkah served its purpose well in cutting through the creaminess of the custard, adding further crunch to the dish. And at $13, it put a smile on my face.

My dining partner also enjoyed their dish; a fluffy frittata of baked prawn, speck and parmesan, served with two slices of gorgeous buttered toast. It was a hearty meal and they also agreed that, given its proximity to university, it was definitely one of the better breakfasts offered in the area. He did, however, mention that he regretted not ordering the baked duck eggs instead – this is definitely something I will be trying next time!

I’m absolutely loving the variety of brekkie and lunch options available to university students and staff, and with new cafes popping up fairly regularly, I can just imagine that variety expanding for the better as time goes on.

There’s no doubt that I’m spoilt for choice here – and I’m definitely not complaining!

P.S. If you’re looking for other places to try in close proximity to the Melbourne University campus that we’ve written on, have a look at Kaprica, Twenty and Six Espresso, Haymarket Place, Seven Seeds & DOC Carlton. More to come!
