Having heard of Spring St Grocer’s array of interesting flavours and delicious cheeses, a dinner at Mamasita was the perfect precursor to a quick detour to the CBD’s hippest grocer.

IMG_3630 IMG_3633 Spring St Grocer is located near parliament station and is marked by the bright neon green and pink signs spanning its modern facade.

Inside, a small cafe at the front gives way to a colourful array of fresh fruits, vegetables, sauces and gourmet jams. The bright orange metal stairway leads hungry patrons downwards to a glossy cheeseroom boasting the punchiest blue cheeses and smoothest camemberts. The smell is divine, and it’s a little bit of a dangerous place to be in – one could easily get carried away!

There are some quite unique flavours here, including fior di latte and cardamom (yummy!) and the shop assistants are more than happy to let you have a try before you commit yourself to a particular flavour.

Large cup ($7.5 for up to 4 flavours)

A large cup comes at $7.50 and will allow you to try up to four flavours. We opt for pistachio, salted caramel and chilli, strawberry and mint and pear and nutella.

The pistachio is the favourite – a vibrant green, it’s beautifully nutty and packed with flavour. The salted caramel and chilli is a close second, though a little surprising in that the salted caramel is quite a gentle flavour, with the chilli adding a heady kick to the ice cream. It sounds like a strange combo, but it works.

The pear and nutella scoop is another great mix of flavours, though a little heavy on the pear; it’s a little difficult to taste the nutella.

I really like the strawberry ice cream – another light and fluffy flavour, it’s delectably smooth with fresh flecks of vibrant mint strewn throughout.

IMG_3638 Overall I’m absolutely stoked to have stumbled across Spring St Grocer. The ice cream is spot on, with exciting flavours and vegan offerings to boot. I have no doubt that I’ll return again, and can’t wait to see what else is on offer the next time I visit.
