Proud Mary Location: 172 Oxford Street Collingwood, VIC Contact: 03 9417 5930 After getting absolutely battered by the wind the other day, we took refuge in Proud Mary. From the inside bench lining the window, we watched as one of the waiters fought against the gripping wind as it, to his dismay, continued to blow all of the lovely blue chairs outside over again and again. Such an unlucky spot of weather, though he did a fantastic job of herding the flock of chairs back to their former places! Amusement aside, the staff, food and coffee at Proud Mary are incredible. At 10am on a weekday the place was already buzzing, packed with individuals all taking shelter from Melbourne’s morning temper.
Axl rose ($7)As predicted, both the latte and the axl rose juice were absolutely marvelous; a perfect pick me up with nothing to fault.
Roasted mushrooms ($16.5)But oh my; those roasted mushrooms had me from the get-go. Huge, thick and juicy mushrooms laid over a thick, golden brown brioche that was so airy and light. All complemented by a rich, bright orange chipotle butter, a big dollop of whipped goats cheese and a poached egg. Those mushrooms were so scrumptious and of generous proportions; insanely rich, and made even richer by that melting chipotle butter. I will have dreams of fields of mushrooms from that point onwards.

Potato Hash 16.5Sadly the white bean cassoulet wasn’t available that day, though the potato hash was a good substitute. A stringy, thick netting with strips of grilled bacon, spinach, a poached egg and a warm bagna cauda sauce. Quite a tasty rendition of the traditional hash, though we didn’t completely love it, and would’ve liked if the hash was a little crispier on the outside and less soft on the inside.

Potato Hash 16.5The servings are quite generous at Proud Mary, and the dishes guaranteed to please; I definitely had a difficult time choosing what to eat, and almost went for those ricotta hotcakes. My neighbour also teased me with her mushy, vibrant green avocado on toast; I definitely had food envy by the end of the hour. Add that to brilliant coffees and friendly service, and you’ve got a star in tow. A lovely, lively place that’s incredibly busy on weekdays and frighteningly packed on weekends. And now one of TFS’s fave places to go.
