Malaymas

Malaymas in North Fitzroy is the kind of place that is able to transport you right to the heart of Southeast Asia, in spirit at least. The informal dining room is full of simple wooden furnishings and oriental ornaments that may remind you of markets in Malaysia and Thailand, but its locale is just off the main drag of Brunswick Road.

IMG_3299 If you lived locally, you’d be a regular. Such is the alluring Malaysian hawker-style food being served from the sizzling woks at this Fitzroy establishment. With all the favourites here (curry laksa, chicken rice, fried kueh teow and har mee), and most of the dishes hovering around $12, Malaymas is cheap eating at its best.

Teh Tarik (hot)

We start off with mugs of heartwarming teh tarik. The pulled tea is as it should be – not too sweet, with a thick layer of froth sitting on top.

Hainanese Chicken Rice ($10.90)

The hainanese chicken rice is quite close to being my favourite in Melbourne; a plate of tender, fragrant chicken, a large mound of fluffy infused rice, and a flavour-packed broth.

Hainanese Chicken Ipoh Hor Fun ($13.90)

E was initially disappointed to hear that Malaymas didn’t carry her fave Assam Laksa, but this was quickly remedied by a less common combination of ipoh hor fun with another plate of that delicious hainanese chicken. With the broth bearing the same addictive quality as that served with the chicken rice and noodles similar to pho, E absolutely loved it.

Nasi lemak ($10.90)

The birthday girl ordered the nasi lemak, which she thoroughly enjoyed – a generous serving of coconut rice, crispy ikan bilis, a handful of peanuts, sliced cucumber, and beef rendang.

Combination Hor Fun ($11.90)

And finally another classic – the wet variant of kueh teow with fried rice noodle in creamy egg sauce, topped with pork, seafood and vegetables. Delicious.

IMG_3329 With rich, punchy flavours and standout takes on Malaysian classics, Malaymas adds another dimension to the growing affinity for Malaysian fare in Melbourne.

Local or not, it’s worth a look.
