Serving the same classic Italian menu that we experienced at DOC Mornington earlier this year, DOC Carlton delivers addictive pizzas using excellent produce and that roaring pizza oven, all in the confines of its simple, contemporary setting in Drummond Street. With a no-bookings policy, the restaurant is only half-full by the time we get there (approximately 6:30), but a queue quickly materialises by the time we leave.

Pizza ai porcini ($22.9)V got the porcini pizza – one that I’d only ever tried at +39 in the city. The DOC Carlton version was quite similar, earthy, salty and cheesy in the right amounts. The base was fluffy and crisp on the edges, topped with slices of juicy mushrooms (yum!).

Pizza DOC ($20.9)I am still very much infatuated with buffalo mozzarella, so this one was another easy choice for me – the mozzarella was so creamy, and accompanied by a tomato base and fresh basil. Its simplicity won’t be for everyone, but it continues to be my favourite. With such an inviting menu complemented by antipasto boards displaying the freshest Italian fare, DOC Carlton delivers delicious pizza with simple yet distinct flavours. The toppings aren’t complex and quickly do away with any sort of unnecessary opulence, ensuring that it’s the quality of the produce that speaks for itself.
