This week in sweets – a trip to La Belle Miette for Melbourne’s best macarons, and chocolate fixes from Le Petit Gateau and Brunetti.

Celebrations call for a good, decadent cake, and when it comes to chocolate, it doesn’t get much better than Le Petit Gateau. I love the layering of textures done here – it’s a thick brownie base, crunchy praline, and a sweet passionfruit custard with a silky chocolate mousse. The combination of crispiness from the praline and the smoothness of the mousse is to die for.

Where else to go for some of the best macarons in Melbourne than La Belle Miette. My favourite place to visit for a taste of France, La Belle Miette offers an array of quirky and classic flavours, such as: 72% Cocoa Single Origin Chocolate (Venezuela), Moet et Chandon, Caramel a la Fleur de Sel, Cherry Blossom & Sake, Earl Grey Chocolate, Lavender and Rose.

Most of these sit at $2.50 a pop, which is relatively standard pricing for macarons in Melbourne.

The rose macaron is intensely sweet, with a very subtle hint of rose infused throughout. The texture of the macrons at La Belle Miette is spot on – crispy on the outside, and gorgeously chewy inside.

Assorted flavours, $2.50 each

My absolute favourite is the caramel macaron (Caramel a la Fleur de Sel); not too sweet, with the intensity of caramel flavours but without the stickiness that usually comes with it.

And finally a trip to Brunetti for one of their signature cakes – the royale. The Carlton estbalishment is huge, and is often packed out from front to back by Lygon Street goers.

Brunetti Royale – $29.40

The royale is rich yet still light, with anΒ almond sponge base filled with dark chocolate mousse and crispy feuilleutine praline biscuits. It’s beautifully decorated with dollops of chocolate on top and dusted off with cocoa.

Brunetti Royale – $29.40

I’ve heard that the Opera cake is one of their best selling offerings; something that I’ll have to try on a future visit.
