Chef Lagenda Location: 16 Pin Oak Crescent, Flemington, VIC 3031 Contact: 03 9376 2668 The little Malaysian joint is located mere metres away from the laksa giant, Laksa King, although it is just as much as local favourite as its neighbour. The facade is clean and simple; step inside and you’ll be greeted by brick walls, wooden tables, shiny metal chairs and that enticing aroma of spices and mixed barbecued meats.
Lagenda meat spring roll ($9.5 for 10)Those spring rolls were a delight, wrapped tightly in crisp lettuce cases, then dipped into that sweet and sour sauce. Though admittedly the amount of lettuce given was far from being enough; with 10 spring rolls, there were a mere 4 leaves.
Seafood curry laksa ($13.2)With its heady mixture of spices, noodles, vegetables and meats, the laksa was the perfect dish to warm the heart and belly. Subtly sweet with a little heat, the coconut milk based broth was perfectly balanced, though admittedly of a thicker consistency and with less of a kick than Laksa King.
Lagenda Meal Deal ($10.5)
Lagenda Meal Deal ($10.5)The only dish amiss was the Lagenda Meal Deal – at $10.5 out comes a bowl of steaming hot noodle soup (with your choice of soup base) and two sets of meats. The two barbecued meats were the major let down; the slices of roast duck had been overcooked and thus were incredibly tough, becoming quite difficult to chew.
Almond red milk tea with pearls ($4.5)We’re still in head-over-heels in love with the laksas dished up at Laksa King, however Chef Lagenda also does a good rendition and sports shorter queues if you’re in a hurry. And with such a vast range of dishes on offer, there’s something for everyone.
